Site-Based Plan

On May 14th, 2012, an update to Bess Streeter Aldrich's site-based plan was approved by a team of parents, staff members, and its administrator. Over the previous months teams of staff and parents worked to develop detailed actions plans to implement various strategies. 

Mission
The mission of Bess Streeter Aldrich Elementary is to guarantee academic excellence through the development of principled young people who become active, inquiring and compassionate life-long learners and global citizens by providing innovative opportunities and challenging programs of international education through guided inquiry.

Vision
Bess Streeter Aldrich is a school that instills a passion for learning and empowers students to actively participate in the learning process. By embracing the gifts and talents of each individual, students will acquire and exhibit positive attitudes enabling them to become model citizens in our diverse world.

Objectives
All students will meet or exceed the district and state standards, and overall performance on district and state assessments will improve annually. 

Each student will participate in setting and achieving challenging educational goals tailored to his or her abilities.

The percentage of students performing at high levels on measures of national and international educational excellence will increase annually.

All students will make a successful transition from one level of education to the next.

All students will develop and consistently demonstrate character traits and positive behaviors necessary for personal excellence and responsible citizenship.


Strategies and Action Plans
STRATEGY 1 
We will develop and implement plans to increase science and social studies district and state assessment scores.

Plan 1:  Utilize best teaching practices in science.

Step 1:Review the IB units of inquiry to ensure all significant science takes place within the Programme of Inquiry.
Step 2:Review science Table of Specs to ensure 3-5 teachers are presenting concepts that will be tested.
Step 3:Review grade level science documents on Angel (Millard Science Standards for K-2 & 3-5, science strategies PowerPoint for 3-5, Millard's Alignment with State Standards in Science).
Step 4:Distribute 5th grade NeSA vocabulary to all grade levels so teachers can present grade level appropriate vocabulary to their students.
Step 5:Use Millard's K-5 Curriculum Guide to ensure district identified lessons in science are taught as they are aligned with testing standards.
Step 6:Support teacher understanding of best practices through research, staff develop, PLC's etc.
Step 7:Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.

PLAN 2:  Utilize best teaching practices in social studies.

Step 1:Review the IB units of inquiry to ensure all significant social studies takes place within the Programme of Inquiry.
Step 2:Review social studies grade level standards and indicators in the Curriculum Guide to ensure K-5 teachers are presenting concepts that will be tested.
Step 3:Review social studies strategies PowerPoint on Angel for grades 3-5.
Step 4:Support teacher understanding of best practices through research, staff development, PLC's etc.
Step 5:Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan


STRATEGY 2
We will develop and implement plans to prepare students for 21st century educational demands.

PLAN 1: Provide professional staff development opportunities to integrate 21st century skills into student learning.

Step 1:Provide a professional staff development schedule for 21st century skills.
Step 2:Provide planning time for staff to work collaboratively to integrate 21st century skills into district and International Baccalaureate curriculum.
Step 3:Implement learning activities that integrate 21st century skills into student learning.
Step 4:Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.

PLAN 2: Provide a continuum of research & technology skills into the existing curriculum.

Step 1:Create a vertical team to work collaboratively to develop a K-5 continuum of Research & Technology skills
for students
Step 2:       Provide time for the vertical team to meet and develop the continuum.
Step 3:Educate staff about the continuum.
Step 4:Provide planning time to integrate skills into grade level curriculum.
Step 5:Implement skills into the regular curriculum.
Step 6:Provide flexible scheduling in the computer lab.
Step 7:Provide flexible scheduling for teacher-librarian.
Step 8:Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.

PLAN 3:  Create a culture that promotes project based, student centered learning opportunities.

Step 1:              Provide professional staff development regarding project based learning to include:  Collaborative learning groups, Student choice, Innovative & creative activities, Assessing project based, student centered learning.
Step 2: Provide planning time for staff to work collaboratively to create learning activities that include: Creativity, Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration.
Step 3: Implement project based, student centered learning activities.
Step 4:  Evaluate the effectiveness of this plan.



STRATEGY 3
We will develop and implement plans to enhance the IB PYP Program at Aldrich

PLAN 1:  Establish educational beliefs and values that reflect IB philosophy.

Step 1:Provide opportunities for the staff to participate in the IB world community.  (Examples include workshop leaders, networking with IB World Schools, Midwest IB Schools, IB Advisory Committees)
Step 2:Enhance communication to the Aldrich community of the IB PYP standards & practices through the use of multimedia tools.  (Examples include, but are not limited to building/district websites, paper or electronic newsletters, parent meetings, etc.)
Step 3:Acquire resources to support the development of the mother tongue of all students.
Step 4:Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.


PLAN 2:  Establish leadership and support structures and resources that ensure the implementation of the PYP

Step 1:                        Create an IB leadership team.  Each member will have an area of expertise and will continually attend IB training in that specific area.  Areas of specialization will include:  inquiry, assessment, international-mindedness, the exhibition, etc.
Step 2:Principal &  coordinator will meet quarterly with District IB leadership Teams to ensure the implementation of the programme by providing time to be dedicated for teachers' collaborative planning and reflection, curriculum alternatives, funding and a smooth transition between the PYP, MYP and DP.
Step 3:Establish clear and well defined expectations to ensure collaborative planning and reflection supports the implementation of the IB PYP.
Step 4:Develop and implement a plan to utilize our diverse parent, student and local community populations to enhance students' understanding of different cultural perspectives.
Step 5:Provide opportunities for student learning that strengthens the student's own cultural identity and celebrates and fosters understanding of different cultures.
Step 6:Establish clear and well defined expectations for reviewing the school's language and assessment policies.
Step 7:Develop and implement guidelines for monitoring and evaluating the program with input from all stakeholders. (parents, students, teachers, community)
Step 8:Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.



PLAN 3:  Improve teaching, learning & assessment at the school to align with the requirements of the PYP.

Step 1:Establish a system for regular review and refinement of the programme of inquiry, individual units of inquiry and subject-specific scope and sequence to ensure it is comprehensive and aligns with the requirements of the programme.
Step 2:Develop and implement a plan that focuses on strengthening the transdiciplinary nature of the curriculum on ensuring that the teaching of the PYP is pervasive throughout the programme and all planning across the curriculum.
Step 3:Support teacher understanding of inquiry and the development of critical thinking through methods such as professional development, Professional Learning Communities, peer mentoring, etc.
Step 4:Utilize district resources including ANGEL so that teachers can share effective teaching strategies, learning resources, quality assessments, etc.
Step 5:Evaluate and provide a learning environment that addresses the experiences, learning needs and styles of all students.
Step 6:Embed internationalism into the programme of inquiry that includes the study of host or home country, the culture of individual students and the cultures of others, including their beliefs system.
Step 7:Provide opportunities for students to become actively responsible for their own learning.
Step 8:Develop and implement a plan that ensures assessment at the school is integral with planning and teaching and learning, addresses all the essential elements of the programme and provides evidence of student learning over time across the curriculum.
Step 9:Create a report card insert that reports student progress aligned with the philosophy of the PYP.
Step 10:Provide opportunities for student action to be an integral part of the curriculum.
Step 11:Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.
